Comic 109: Namco and Atari: The Backstory

Time for Namco and Atari's backstory! Namco, before they made games themselves (they started running various mechanical and coin-op rides) got interested in Atari's games shortly after Atari tried distributing their games in Japan, and ended up being Atari's game distributor for Japan.

It's interesting to see the pre-vidya history of so many video game companies, and how they were making games long before. And in the case of Konami, have pitifully regressed backwards into.

Although it seems their financial reports will show them in time. We will see. If I get it right then they made profit but overall are having troubles selling their "games".

No matter their profits, they don't really have the best reputation as a "game company" anymore...

It's my understanding that in their last release, they showed profits, but the profits didn't come from pachinko; it came their games, particularly Metal Gear Solid 5. Irony...

That time when something like PONG was revolutionary and nowadays it is a game design school first year project. Maybe even high school... Heh.
Although back then there were no engines or writing games in C/++ (I think) and people had to code in Assembly right for the particular console or arcade machine. Often had to find clever workarounds.
If I am not not mistaken, Atari allowed one background and two sprites from the technical standpoint so it is like most games needed workarounds.

Man... Two moving paddles, one moving ball and a score counter. People loved their fun, huh.

Haha, yeah x3 Making games is easier today in a lot of ways... and allows for more complicated stuff.

In case it sounded like criticizing game development today (in terms of tools) then I did not want to, haha.
Just that I admire their ways. Tools or skill do not matter when the idea and execution are good (simple looking indies prove that).
Definitely better for engines to do the job so you do not have to print and read papers full of instruction sets :D :D
