Comic 46: Mobile Games Not Selling

Alright, alright, I'm rather late to the party with a comic like this... but I did have this idea ever since the Nintendo teaming up with DeNA (Japanese mobile gaming company) to make mobile games and also work on some new server for Nintendo game accounts was announced (during a week when I didn't have much comic-drawing time) and wanted to get it out there. Plus, I got to draw Nintendo in a suit :D

Anyway, I was VERY skeptical to the Nintendo-making-mobile-games thing happening and almost couldn't believe it... and got this idea for a comic. After reading more about it, I felt a bit more "okay" about it(still not happy, but just okay) when hearing the actual plans - but still, it would be fun if this happened.
("Just don't sell..." Now where have we heard that excuse before, hm...)

Pretty good list of the most annoying gaming tropes! I was going to add backtracking, but the "missable collectables" basically has that covered.

Haha, yes, I tried to think of all the gameplay mechanics I can't stand. Yeah, missable collectibles are the bane of every collector's existence... the worst kind are the ones you get on a level/area you can only play once and can't go back to afterwards... you have no idea what the level looks like, how can you know where it is?

Other things I don't like:
* Like you mentioned, backtracking.
* Grinding. Just... grinding. Some training is fine, but having to beat thousands of the same kinds of weaker enemies you already beat hundreds of times before just so you have a chance against the next boss is NOT FUN.
* Long, long tutorials. Short tutorial levels are good and often necessary (hey, who actually reads the digital-only manuals), but sometimes they just drag on for too long.
* When a game autosaves right before a boss ect and also makes you lose all/half your items if you die, especially if there are no powerups/item shops/ect nearby. My brother had a game that was unwinnable (at one of the last levels, no less) because of this...
* "Flying" levels, like Fluzzard in Mario Galaxy. I just never liked the gameplay and found it annoying/confusing.
* Super Hard for the sake of hard alone. I don't mind a challenge, but if they just want it to be CHALLENGE CHALLENGE HARD GIT GUD without much else going for it, I'll lose interest pretty quickly.
* Similar to escort missions, the "protect this thing for x amount of time while enemies attack it" levels - especially if you can't heal (haven't seen this a lot, but I think Mario Galaxy had a few stages like this)

Yes, all of these are terrible. I think I kind of misunderstood the missable collectables thing. I was thinking of REQUIRED collectables that you don't know are required until towards the end of the game, and you have to go back to look for them. There were a couple N64 games notorious for this. The other one for me is bad AI partners. I saw that coming a mile away and I STILL bought Resident Evil 5...
I also dislike when a required section is completely out of genre. (Big the Cat fishing in Sonic Adventure, the rhythm game garbage in Zak and Wiki...)

Not really (though those would be extra annoying), I just meant regular optional collectibles that are just fun to 100%.

And yes, terrible AI is terrible, especially when combined with escort missions... how am I supposed to save them when they just run off and get themselves killed all the time? I remember some Pokémon Mystery Dungeon missions (thankfully optional quests) being horrible in this regard... even though my partner's AI was set to "follow" they suddenly ran off in another direction and got into a fight with a much stronger Pokémon before I could reach them again...

I think different genre sections aren't always that bad, though that really depends on the individual game and how well the section is done. Don't think I've gotten to the rhythm part in Zack & Wiki (really need to continue that game again...) but I like rhythm games so I'm not sure if I'd find it that bad? Unless it's just badly made in general

The Zak and Wiki thing was weird because I'm usually fine at rhythm games (DDR, Guitar Hero, etc.) I almost think there was something wrong with my calibration because I tried a dozen times and couldn't get passed a really basic rhythm thingy. Ruined the game for me.

Yeah, I googled that just now actually and seems like you're not the only one... a lot of people seem to have problems with that part, like the controller doesn't work like it should. Sounds pretty annoying, yeah...

Hm, Japan DOES have a thing for mobile games though.
It would not surprise me if Nintendo went that way full speed in the future.

I've noticed that, yeah... Personally, I don't "get" mobile games - the controls are too limited, and the market is pretty much based around cheap freemium cashgrabs. Just let me pay for a game once and that's it...

And even though they're doing this now, Nintendo's always going to keep making consoles (unless consoles at one point stop being a thing at all - which I hope not), so I wouldn't worry about that. Also note that the company they're collabing with are also helping them build a new game account system(or something like that... possibly what's going to replace Club Nintendo) that can be accessed through Nintendo consoles, computers and mobile, so could have something to do with that...

Agreed. I am just a bit negative at times when it comes to this :D

Like I do not really get the move with Pokemon Shuffle. I guess the success (was it?) was only because of Pokemon.
I mean it follows the traditional route of a few battles and then buy this and that so you have a better chance.
Then again, it is not developed by Nintendo.

Well, Nintendo did a few free-to-play games before that too, like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and the Steel Diver game, so Shuffle isn't the first one. I haven't tried Shuffle yet, and don't really feel like it...

All Nintendo needs now is a city building game with a free-to-play model and they'll have a best seller!

While we're talking about pet peeves in game design, I absolutely despise it when they map attacks to the same button used FOR JUMPING. It's cost me many a life in Sonic Heroes. I also hate half-assed voice acting. Tails in every pre-Colours Sonic game is a repeat offender on that front.

So, yeah. Sonic Heroes sucks. (Good strip, by the way!)

Yeah, those games where you have to either wait almost a day or pay all the time?

Ugh yeah, I can't stand when they do that either... Make each button do one thing only or at least let you switch between them, dammit!

Something else I really really hate is limited possibility to save, including the use of distinct 'saving points', they often marvel with their absence when particularly needed..

Bonus points when combined with those long unskippable cutscenes, I once had to sit through a 20 minutes scene with a character talking and talking and talking, right after that there was a battle where I disastrously died. Some people must be sadists.. xD

And yeah, limited saves can be really annoying...

20 minute long scene, seriously? :O I usually don't mind seeing cutscenes the first time, but at least let us skip after that... And with cutscenes like that you have to wonder why they didn't just make a movie instead.

I'll add another thing I usually don't see complaints about but that annoys the hell out of me: un<i>pause</i>able cutscenes.

Although this probably doesn't faze too much people because they don't live in the same house as my mom. She must have some kind of cutscene sense or something, because whenever I enter a long one she calls me, and the longer it will be, or the harder it will BE to reload and reach it again, the more urgent it is when she starts screaming to me GET OVER HERE RIGHT THIS INSTANT I NEED YOU NOW WHAT ARE TAKING YOU SO LONG WARGHARBLJGASWWHARGH I'LL COUNT TO THREE ONETWO...

And, of course, since I can't just <i>pause</i> the bloody thing I have to choose between angering her, missing the stupid cutscene or loading and replaying a whole section just to have another go at not losing a chunk of the story. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
