Comic 47: Design Double Standards

So a while back, Square Enix decided to change the outfit of the main character for the upcoming Mobius (previously known as Mevius) Final Fantasy game. The problem? Well, fans thought his outfit was "too sexy" and showed off too much skin (oh no, the sides of his hips are showing!) ...Which, okay, he DOES look pretty ridiculous(like a lot of Final Fantasy characters), but it does seem a bit hypocritical considering there's tons of female characters, including those from Square Enix, wearing just as little or less than this guy is. I think if game developers insist on putting female characters in much more revealing and impractical clothing, it's only fair to have some dudes looking like this too from time to time. And if it makes some guys uncomfortable? Well... now you know how it feels?

(Also, a note: I'm not really complaining about these specific female characters or only their designs - I haven't really played any of the games and don't know a lot about the characters or how they're actually portrayed - just using the costumes to point out a general character design trend. I could have gone with many other characters too)

(Also I'm pretty sure I got some outfit details wrong. Only so much of the design you can get from a few pictures...)

He's weak and needs more protection than female characters.. ;)

Yes, this is a major pet peeve of mine. While I'm fine with scantily clad female characters, I do expect the male ones to be treated the same way.

Obviously, women have naturally thicker skin for better protection than men, and thus won't need as much coverage... Plus their clothes are magnetic and all weapons/attacks will automatically go towards the clothes rather than their exposed skin.

Yeah, I think I'd be less bothered by female character designs in many games if the male characters were dressed in a similar way. It's always kind of jarring to see women in chainmail bikinis standing next to guys in fully covering armor...

Exactly. This is exactly what is wrong with gaming industry.

I love how Square Enix even has belts on his chair

by Zanreo at 22nd Apr 2015, 11:06 PM

Yeah, of course he would
Speaking of uncomfortable, I don't think that chair looks too comfortable to lean back in...

Nice point on gender double standards! Whenever I make political comics about gender I tend to beat people over the head with my message - so props for making your commentary funny/clever!

Yeah, I tried not making it too anvilicious, but still getting my point across. Thanks!
