Comic 59: Rest in Peace, Iwata

Today I woke up to some sad news... Satoru Iwata, president and CEO of Nintendo, has died, only 55 years old.

Iwata was a great man, a programming genius and a great boss for Nintendo. This is the guy who reprogrammed Earthbound from scratch and saved the game, compressed Pokémon Gold/Silver so the developers could add double as much data (including Kanto), debugged Smash Bros Melee just a few weeks before release, and cut his own salary in half some years back when Nintendo was losing money so he wouldn't have to fire anyone. He put games before profits, knew that games were all about fun, and clearly cared about the company and games. He wasn't afraid to have some fun and goof off in Nintendo Directs and other presentations, bringing us memorable moments like "banana holding", "Year of Luigi" and "Reggie vs. Iwata fight"

It's still hard to believe he's gone... No more seeing him present games DIRECTLY to you in Nintendo Directs. No more Iwata Asks. No more of his great leadership skills and love for games the gaming world needed.

Rest in peace, Iwata. You will be greatly missed.
I think I'll play some Earthbound in his memory for the rest of the day...

"On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." - Satoru Iwata

This came out of nowhere.
He was OK at E3 but alas such illness strikes without warning.

I think another rare mark of his is how he presented himself to the gamers as a whole.
Not only that but as a Japanese CEO overall. They usually only care about Japan and that is it.
However, he even tried to speak English and show himself on E3 and of course directs. The name is fitting. Direct.
This has my respect from the pure business point of view as everything gaming related was pretty much discussed already.

An unfortunate loss.

Yes... We sadly don't see CEOs like him often.

Don't have much to say, but rest in peace. A really great human.

As a kid, one of my most thrilling memories was beating Pokemon Silver and wondering what could possibly be left to do, only to discover I had the entire region of Kanto to explore. Since I had never had the chance to play Red or Blue, I was indescribably excited and happy. I owe all of that to Mr. Iwata.

It might seem like a silly little thing, but it was very meaningful to me, and I'm sure countless others have similar stories to share. Gaming lost someone truly remarkable, but his amazing work and legacy will be what we remember most of all.

I understand that perfectly... when I read that he was the reason we have Kanto in those games, I was just amazed. My first game was Crystal and I had never played Red/Blue before either... being able to explore a WHOLE NEW WORLD after this was just amazing and I loved it.

I will always remember him as a great CEO in the industry and the best leader Nintendo could have had.

A great tribute to a great man. Really shows how much he helped give to the world.

Yeah... From the games, to the consoles, to the amazing programming skills, to the fun memetic moments representing his game vision of "fun"... he did a lot of amazing things, and was the kind of person the game industry really needed.

It's sad he's gone...
He was a great guy

Instead of feeling sadness over his loss, I feel we should find joy in his life, his legacy
I don't know
Maybe that's what he would have wanted...

Yeah... looking back at his achievements with a smile on our faces...
